La Catastròfa: Oratorio for Marcinelle

Music

The Arcanto Choir performs a musical oratory to commemorate the Marcinelle disaster. One of the darkest moments in Italian and European history, the Marcinelle tragedy took place the morning of the 8th August 1956 in the mining district of Charleroi in Belgium. 262 miners died, including 136 Italians.
Based on the book La Catastròfa (The Catastrophe) by Paolo Di Stefano, Etta Scollo has composed a musical oratory which will be performed for the first time in Germany.
Alongside her on the stage, the actor Udo Samel will give voice through music to the testimonies of widows, orphans, survivors and rescuers, whose stories intertwine with a juridical reconstruction derived from court records and interviews.
