The legacy of 1000 years of Italian ceramics

Exhibitions

The selection of 150 pieces from the MIC collections, the greatest collection in the world totally devoted to international ceramic art, is going to portrait an Italian story thanks to significant pieces which represent the numerous territories, the main styles and regional characteristics from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
The works reflect the influences coming from different ages and countries, as it happened for the “blue and white” production, clearly imitating the Chinese ceramics, or the “chinoiseries”, a trend in Italy and in Europe starting from the 17th century, fully developed from the 18th century. The Renaissance is a central period in Italy for all the forms of art, and also in the ceramic field it is possible to admire the greatest and most interesting productions, supported by a constant research and a continuous relation with painting. Outstanding centres of production are Faenza, Deruta, Casteldurante, Montelupo, Castelli, Urbino, Pesaro, Gubbio, among the others. Each territory shows its own typology, style and art tendency which during the centuries have changed orientation, facing the trends of each epochs. Ceramics in fact reflects the society and the lifestyle of each territory.
When during the 20th century ceramics started to reduce its functional purposes in favour of sculptural creations and decorative elements representing an epoch, it fully expressed in this new aspect its plastic dimension linked to new artistic researches and experimentations. Beside the masters and prize-winners who have been protagonists since 1938, date of foundation of the prestigious Faenza Prize – Competition of ceramic art, there are also, starting from the Fifties, emerging designers who followed the work of a great architect, Gio Ponti, a pioneer of the Italian interior design and a master of the new trends of the 20th century bourgeoisies.
