Mario is a lumpenproletarian who has un unresolved Oedipus complex and other inhibitions at personal and social level. He rebels just in words against alienation of life and behavior produced by modern society. In the sexual sphere, too, Mario is strongly stuck. His friends play the worst tricks on him, but he accepts any kind of condition.

Directorial debut for Giuseppe Bertolucci and first role for Roberto Benigni. A classic of Italian cinema, unfortunately not very well-known.
