"Secret Garden" by Alessandra Calò

Exhibitions

On the occasion of “The Contemporary Art Day”, the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid presents Secret Garden, an installation by Alessandra Calò.
The artist gathers and saves from oblivion a series of negatives depicting portraits of women without any biographical indication. Inspired by herbariums and the constant search for themes relevant to the “feminine,” she creates arboreal visions through those negatives, symbolizing the “secret garden” hidden inside each one of us. Each portrait acquires a new identity thanks to the involvement of contemporary female authors who were invited by the artist to write a short story inspired by one of those unknown figures.
El Jardin Secreto is an exhibition created in conclusion of a path started in 2017, when Alessandra Calò was guested in the Italian Cultural Institute for an artistic residency.
In that period, she found archives photographic documents (glass negatives) and got in touch with Spanish female authors: Violeta Medina, journalist and poet; Sandra Fernández (aka La Santa) electronic music composer; Lara Siscar, writer and TV speaker; Marcia Tambutti Allende, filmmaker, biologist and nephew of Salvador Allende; Mariana Rondón, art director, writer, film producer; María de Muns, director of the Colores de Calcuta Foundation, Rosana Pastor, parliamentarian and actress.
The artwork became an intimate dialogue with great relevance, made up of reality and imagination, social themes tied to the female figure and to the evolution of its changing condition through time.
Beside El Jardin Secreto, the exhibit in Madrid proposes two other projects by Alessandra Caló: Kochan, presented in Paris during the festival of Contemporary Photography Circulations, and Les Inconnues, an unpublished project.

Artist and photographer Alessandra Calò works and lives in Reggio Emilia. Since the beginning of her career, she has been experimenting the use of new languages that allow her to deepen her grasp on themes related to memory, identity, and to the language of the photography itself.
“Recollection” is the dominant theme in her work: a state of mind combined with reality and not simply a nostalgic evoking of the past. She is passionate about old print photographic processes (silver salts, Van Dyke Brown, Cyanotype).
She has participated in exhibitions and festivals in Italy and abroad, as Festival Circulations in Paris, SI Fest in Savignano, Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia and Open House in Rome.
