The impossible mathematics
Composition Commission issued to Ivan Fedele
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its founding, Icarus Ensemble, together with Cantus Ensemble (Croatia), has commissioned the composer Ivan Fedele to write a piece for piano, percussion and ensemble with the title X-tension 2. The intention is to form a triptych with two previous works, Images by Escher and Arcipelago Moebius, which illustrate one of the possible relationships between music (or art) and science.
Mathematics is not only the “exact science”, the language through which man has deciphered and interpreted the principles that govern the world. Mathematics is a form of poetics, it is an “artistic” discipline that is in no way as rigid as it is commonly believed to be, quite the contrary. The proof of this can be found in those arts, like music, in which mathematics not only offers a basic support but also provides a source of poetic inspiration. It supplies both form and content. In Twins, on the other hand, the fundamental concept is the opposition of dual entities (pairs of instruments and groups of instruments, stereophonic contrasts, alternation of timbres). The performance is conceived as an interaction between music on one side and mathematics and physics on the other.
