Butterfly, ethereal and wounded, is the main character of Monica Casadei’s last work, a play that talks about an inner drama, about loneliness and hurt emotions, singing about a long wait and its tragic and unavoidable end. It is a play about sweetness and courage, whose strength is personified by the dancers’ bodies, in the choreography and in the music.
The music alternates between the arias sung by Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Opera and the apocalyptic atmospheres, evocative of ancient rituals, score by the composer Luca Vianini. The stage space is split between Butterfly, suspended in an abstract and pure space-time, interpreted by the aerial dancer Elena Annovi, and a stage animated by the dancers who represent the bowels of Butterfly, her deep sorrow, her courage, her decision to end her life in an ancient and valiant way, with Harakiri.
The choreography is fast and impetuous and recalls a flow of consciousness and the impulsive reaction to events; but Butterfly is suspended in an unlimited, vibrant, melancholic and silent wait, between lightness, dream, and melancholy. Her purity is also evoked by the original art works by the Italian artist Delio Gennai, author of delicate paper writing suspended over the scene.
