Cinema in Basilicata

Matera and beyond. Thinking about the films shot in Basilicata, one cannot help but starting from its symbolic city, which has been used several times as a set by both Italian productions - the Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew is valid for all - and international ones - Mel Gibson's The Passion, just to remember one of the most famous titles, and also the very latest James Bond, still in production.
But Matera does not fulfill Basilicata cinematic scenarios. Thanks to Basilicata uncontaminated nature and intact landscapes, these scenarios were chosen to tell stories often set in a more or less distant past - from the '50s of Michele Placido’s Of Lost Love to the '70s of Gabriele Salvatores’ I'm Not Scared - without giving up the present - as the contemporary Basilicata coast to coast by Rocco Papaleo.
The reference between the past and the present, thanks to the beauty of its landscapes, continues to be renewed as evidenced by the recent and happy examples of The Legendary Giulia and Other Miracles by Edoardo Leo (2016) and Moschettieri del Re – La penultima missione by Giovanni Veronesi (2018).

The photos on display come from the Centro Cinema Città di Cesena’s archives. The exhibition is curated by the director Antonio Maraldi, who will attend the Festival.
