Not Adam is the new theatre project by Alessandra Cortesi, characterised by two show proposals: Not Adam Studio 1 and Not Adam in Mask.
Studio 1 was born from a first period of research and soon became a precious focus on the role of women in Theatre. Following the audience’s appreciation, the Company would like to promote the project either in theatre venues and in other cultural contexts as an opportunity to engage a diverse audience, in order to stimulate an exchange of ideas and explore together gender issues.
The first stage of the project displays the outcome of the research on womankind and narrates about the birth and evolution of the job of the actress through stories and anecdotes on the conquest of the stage. The 50 minutes long performance sees 3 actresses on scene, blending storytelling and prose theatre. It talks about the last 500 years of history, through a collection of thoughts, documents, classic plays and dialogue with the audience, to retrace the adventures of women in Theatre.
Not Adam in Mask is the second part of the project, born from the dates of the festival “I martedì dAlle Donne” (Tuesdays by women). It is a sensitive and poetic performance that uses the universal language of Masks to reduce the spoken word to the essential, in order to take the show abroad and open the studies to international contexts.
The performance displays the life of an ordinary Italian village, where the well-defined gender roles play as a restriction to the range of action. A story of a long-lasting friendship between two women and the course of their destinies, already written by the previous generations, for which they would deny or lose their feelings. A quiet experience with some ironic nuances, where you can dive in and recognize the soil on which gender inequality laid down its roots. The same soil that could become for the next generations a space where to build on and from where they can expand their views without restrictions.
The bodies on stage carry within their moves the permanent signs of the place where they grew up, the Italian peninsula. Moreover, the women of this story show us the power of recognizing themselves as protagonists of their own time despite the gender preconceptions imposed by society.
