'Modena Città del Bel Canto' Concert

Emilia-Romagna Region Promotional Events

Thanks to its musical tradition and the appeal exerted by the great names of opera, Modena has always been a must for those who wish to perfect their vocal techniques and presence on stage. Many former students of Mirella Freni and Raina Kabaivanska are now renowned singers who perform in the most important theatres around the world.
It is in this context that the project “Modena città del Bel Canto” was born. Promoted by Fondazione di Modena, Comune di Modena, Fondazione Teatro Comunale and the Institute of Musical Studies ‘Vecchi - Tonelli’, it has two main objectives: the training and professional growth of young opera singers; the musical production and the enhancement of the cultural offer of the territory.
To promote the young talents and introduce the initiatives of the project to the press, to cultural professionals, and to opera lovers, the Teatro Comunale ‘Pavarotti-Freni’ has organized a series of international events, with concerts featuring the students of the courses taking place in Modena.

The concert in Madrid is performed by pianist Paolo Andreoli, collaborator of Raina Kabaivanska and of the Pavarotti Foundation, together with two other students of Modena Belcanto: soprano Iolanda Massimo and tenor Vincenzo Tremante. The programme is dedicated to famous pieces of the Neapolitan tradition, from the eighteenth-century opera to the classic Neapolitan song.

The Modena Città del Belcanto project was born out of a first pilot experience carried out in 2004 with the specialization course in opera singing held by high calibre teachers such as Luciano Pavarotti, Mirella Freni, Raina Kabaivanska and Leone Magiera.

The advanced training course for opera singers promoted by the Teatro Comunale di Modena was started in 2016 by Mirella Freni and it has soon achieved international success, it combines classroom training with experience on stage. Among the teachers, illustrious names of world opera: Leone Magiera, Mariella Devia, Barbara Frittoli, Chris Merritt, and Michele Pertusi.

The annual Masterclass for opera singers in "Vocal technique and interpretation of the repertoire" directed by Raina Kabaivanska takes place at the Vecchi-Tonelli Institute in Modena. During the Masterclass, the students can show their talent in numerous events such as concerts and lessons open to the public. Singers who are considered today among the most acclaimed interpreters of the international opera scene attended this Masterclass course during the 15 years of its activity.

Throughout their Modenese training, students are given the opportunity to sing in the operas staged by the Teatro Comunale and the Vecchi-Tonelli Institute. According to custom, the students of the singing schools are required to perform in the productions staged in memory of the death anniversary of Luciano Pavarotti on the 6th of September and for the concert in memory of the birthday anniversary of the great tenor on the 12th of October.
