Why can’t they see the world crumbling around us?
We are inevitably the first to be struck and at the same time disturbed by the character Cassandra. Every time a civilisation puts its own existence at risk, as we have today, Cassandra re-emerges from the folds of the myth and leaves us stunned by her apocalyptic assertions. In our Cassandra she, who calls on the whole human race to do everything possible to save its civilisation, is not the youngster who prophesies on the walls of Troy under siege, but a girl – of our times perhaps – who cannot bear to witness the devastating process of extinction that is taking place without giving her own “testimony”.
“Why can’t they see the world crumbling around us?”, queries the stunned Cassandra. Her question is directed at us and invites everyone, like her, to give our testimony. Because what’s most important is to be human, to believe in and care for our existence which from the ashes will flourish once more, in every language, every place, till the end of time.
