Fraternal Compagnia in Brazil with the project “La Commedia dell’Arte nel mondo” - "Masquerade Mask"

Theatre

Fraternal Compagnia presents for the first time in Brazil the project “La Commedia dell’Arte nel mondo” – a tribute to all the characters of Italian traditional theatrical culture and a vehicle to introduce the public to the world of the Commedia dell’Arte.
From March 12 to April 21, the project was developed in Salvador in co-operation with the Universidade Federal di Bahia – UFBA. The activities included workshops on the use of masks and the use of body in the 'Commedia dell'Arte' and on the creation of a leather mask, and the staging of the Portuguese version of two shows from the Fraternal Compagnia’s repertoire – Masquerade Mask and Captain Fracasse.

From April 27 to May 12, the activities continue in the region of Paraná and in a Florianópolis in co-operation with Teatro do Alvorecer and Teatro Barracão in Curitiba. They will include new workshops and the staging of Masquerade Mask, the Commedia dell’Arte performance that goes with an exhibition of 16 masks, in which, thanks to the training done in Salvador, Brazilian actor Douglas Kodi plays the role of the actor-presenter in the show.

The workshops will take place in Curitiba:
May 1-5, at the Escola do Ator Comico, open to everybody;
May 2-3-9-10, at the Teatro Barracão, for directors and teachers.

Masquerade Mask is on stage in:
Campo Mourão, at the Teatro Municipal, April 27
Maringà, at the Teatro Barracão, April 28-29
Florianopólis, at the University of Florianopólis, May 7
Curitiba, at the Teatro Barracão Encena, May 10-11-12.

from 27/04/2024 to 12/05/2024

Masquerade Mask
a Commedia dell'Arte performance and mask exhibition

Two servants, Pasta and Pizza, will welcome the public and will be at the service of their master, a professor whose task is to introduce and explain the cultural phenomenon of the Commedia dell’Arte to the spectators. It will then be the task of the servants to bring the Masks to life, using three types of language: verbal, musical and bodily.
The show is a tribute to all the characters of Italian traditional theatrical culture: from the old Venetian merchant, Pantalone, to the servants, from the Doctor to the Captains, the nobles, and lovers. The characters through their games and jokes address fundamental social issues: the power of love, the love of power, the hunger and misery of the less fortunate, and magic, which is essential to change their lives for the better.
The space left for improvisation, the representation of stereotypes in the plots, and the involvement of the audience in a playful way, through direct and constant contact, are fundamental elements of the show. In addition, to honouring and reviving the tradition of the cultural phenomenon of Comedy, one of the objectives is to eliminate the distance between actor and spectator, making the audience an integral part of the show.
At the end of each performance, the cast and crew will answer any questions and clear up any confusions the audience may have, emphasizing the craftsmanship of the masks and introducing the exhibition that accompanies the show.
