Fraternal Compagnia presents for the first time in Brazil the project “La Commedia dell’Arte nel mondo” – a tribute to all the characters of Italian traditional theatrical culture and a vehicle to introduce the public to the world of the Commedia dell’Arte.
The project is developed in Brazil in co-operation with the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). It will offer numerous students the opportunity to train in this artistic expression, as well as on the creation of the traditional leather masks typical of this theatrical genre.
From March 12 to 16, at the Escola de Teatro of the UFBA, the company will hold some workshops on the use of masks and the use of body in the Commedia dell'Arte and on the creation of the stage elements –the leather mask, in particular.
Training for the staging of the Portuguese version of two shows from the Fraternal Compagnia’s repertoire - Masquerade Mask and Captain Fracasse - will take place between 18 March and 17 April.
For the Portuguese version of Captain Fracasse, director Massimo Macchiavelli will be accompanied by Professor Marcus Villa Gòis. Master mask maker and trainer Luca Comastri will support Macchiavelli in the setting of the show and the student-actors in the creation of the leather masks.
Captain Fracasse will be on stage at the Teatro Martim Gonçalves of the UFBA from April 18 to 21.

Young baron of Sigognac is the last descendant of a fallen noble family of Gascony. He lives in hardship and privation in the midst of the ruins of his castle. One stormy night, a company of comedians arrives at his home to seek refuge. The young man decides to join the theatrical troupe to reach Paris, his aim being also to be received at Court and restore his fortune. Along the way, among thousand vicissitudes, duels, loves and friendships, the baron himself becomes an actor, taking the stage name of Captain Fracasse.
Théophile Gautier’s novel is a timeless initiatory journey that takes us into 17th century France through the adventures of a theatre company. Italian and French film adaptations contributed to the creation of an original language which combines the Commedia dell’Arte with the tradition of swashbuckling novels. Without missing the comic-farcical dimension, Captain Fracasse oscillates between two registers, alternating comic jokes and dramatic scenes. Live music, expressly composed for the show, contributes to create the daring universe of the work.
