Antiche arie e danze per liuto arranged for ensemble
.
Antiche arie e danze per liuto are a collection of free transcriptions of lute pieces from the 16th and 17th centuries, created by Ottorino Respighi and arranged in three suites for different orchestral ensembles.
In 1917 Respighi created the Suite No.1, in 1923 the Suite No.2, and in 1931 the Suite No.3.
His wife Elsa collected and rearranged them all in 1937, when they were also used for a ballet, with scenes by his close friend Claudio Guastalla, staged at the Scala in Milan.
In the Orchestra del Baraccano's original arrangement the eight real parts that make up the ensemble try to reproduce all the orchestral colours Respighi thought up, with the intention of creating a fascinating synthesis between ensuring the presence of instruments that were fundamental to Respighi, such as harp and harpsichord, and seeking a new and modern sound with the inclusion of accordion and tuba bass.

The Orchestra del Baraccano was born within the activities of the Teatro del Baraccano in Bologna, where a production and research project on chamber music theatre is carried out. Founded in 2013, it is directed by Giambattista Giocoli.
The goal of the Orchestra is to play works originally composed for large orchestras with chamber music ensembles, producing new scores played "in real parts".
The Orchestra has produced numerous musical theatre performances both independently and in co-production and collaboration with other bodies.
