Presentation of the French translation of “Una città di pianura”
Published in 1940 under a false name due to the racial laws, Una città di pianura ("A City of the Plain") is Giorgio Bassani’s first book. Unpublished in France to date, the book offers an insight into a literary universe in progress. The author explores both a geographical area –Ferrara and its surroundings– and a sociological one, that of an uneasy and naive small-town bourgeoisie, trapped in tired rituals, obtuse conventions and rules. These are already the places and themes that will later be developed in his mature masterpieces, such as Gli occhiali d'oro (The Gold-rimmed Spectacles) and Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini (The Garden of the Finzi-Continis).
